Human Rights Education in the North Caucasus

This program is one the educational projects of the Civic Assistance Committee. We are implementing it since September 2009 with the support of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee.

Our goal is to raise awareness on human rights and principles of civil society organization among young people and teachers in the North Caucasus. Also, we try to involve active program participants in further social and civic activities.

As part of the program, we conduct seminars on human rights and advocacy for young people and teachers from Chechnya, Ingushetia and North Ossetia. Workshop participants develop social and civic mini-projects and then implement those in their regions.

This work helps to create basis for broader education activities – graduates of the program can become trainers and organize such meetings in their region.

The North Caucasus region is one of the most problematic regions in Russia. High unemployment rate, corruption, human rights violations, which are reported by human rights organizations. The current situation is largely due to the effects of unresolved armed conflicts – two Chechen wars and the Ossetian-Ingush conflict.

To enable traditional in structure Caucasus regions to develop in a democratic way, it is necessary to build there civil society institutions. But this problem can be solved only if the republics’ population will understand and respect concepts of human rights and human dignity. That is why it is so important to raise awareness of the residents of the North Caucasus.

Our program provides a unique opportunity to explain how a modern constitutional state should function, what are the mechanisms to protect human rights. Most importantly, the program participants learn to find ways of peaceful resolution of social problems.

Seminars and trainings on human rights in the North Caucasus:

– Basic human rights workshops for young people from Chechnya, Ingushetia and North Ossetia.
– Large schools on human rights for the participants of the basic workshops who conducted a survey after basic workshop.
– Seminars on human rights and informal teaching methods for teachers from Chechnya, Ingushetia and North Ossetia.
